A Career Devoted to Classic Hollywood, American Literature, Cultural History, and the Stories Behind Motion Pictures.

Biography

John Mulholland is an award-winning filmmaker, writer, and film historian based in New York City whose work focuses on classic Hollywood, American literature, and cultural history. Over the course of his career, he has written and directed numerous documentaries examining the intersection of film, politics, and storytelling, often revisiting iconic works and the historical forces that shaped them.

His documentaries include Inside High Noon, narrated by Matthew Rhys, an exploration of the political tensions and blacklisting controversies surrounding the making of the 1952 classic High Noon and Sergeant York: Of God and Country, narrated by Liam Neeson, which examines the cultural and political debates surrounding the landmark World War II-era film; and Cooper & Hemingway: The True Gen, narrated by Sam Waterston and named a New York Times Critics’ Pick, which explores the twenty-year friendship between actor Gary Cooper and author Ernest Hemingway.

His additional work includes Elmore Leonard: But Don’t Try to Write, further reflecting his interest in the relationship between literary and cinematic storytelling.

Throughout his career, Mulholland has interviewed and collaborated with a distinguished range of actors, writers, scholars, and cultural figures. His projects have featured contributions from Angela Lansbury, Morgan Freeman, Kirk Douglas, Frank Langella, Leonard Nimoy, Len Cariou, Estelle Parsons, Patricia Neal, Charlton Heston, and Liza Minnelli, among many others.

He has also worked with noted authors and literary figures including Elmore Leonard, George Plimpton, Jim Harrison, Otto Penzler, Bridgett Davis, Rachel Howzell Hall, and Jim Born. These conversations and collaborations have helped shape his reputation for exploring the personal stories, creative processes, and historical contexts behind influential figures in film and literature.

Beyond documentary filmmaking, Mulholland has extended his work into publishing and graphic fiction. He is the author of the Classic Film Chatter series, published by Monde Ciné Classique, which explores major film genres and their cultural and political significance.

His graphic novels, published by Colossal New York, include Checkmate, a battle-of-the-sexes thriller; High Riviera, a romantic chase set in the South of France; and Tenderloin, set in the Gilded Age of New York.

Several of his graphic works are directly inspired by his documentaries. High Legend is based on Inside High Noon and dramatizes the behind-the-scenes story of the film’s production and political controversy, while After the Hell Is Over draws from Cooper & Hemingway: The True Gen to portray the life and creative legacy of Ernest Hemingway.

Across film, books, and graphic storytelling, Mulholland’s work reflects a sustained engagement with character, history, and the enduring power of classic narrative.
